The ECU ran their tests on my dragon, but they didn’t let me speak to the four Storms. All they let me do was see them. They’d put them to sleep on purpose, to give their bodies time and space to regenerate faster. They were malnourished, at the end of their strength, and traumatized. I saw them in the medical wing through the window from the corridor. They were clean now. They looked peaceful. Wick promised I would to be the first to speak to them when they awoke. Wilder had gone off to a meeting nobody knew anything about, and he wouldn’t be at the office until later. Better that way. I needed to cool down from the effect he kept having on me.

Colton Stone, Calvin’s father, was in worse condition than I was. He agreed to meet me right away when I called him on my way back to the City from the monastery. We met in his limo, and his tear-filled eyes begged me for answers I was hoping he could give to me.

Nothing. The last time he’d spoken to his son was before the party we’d had at the monastery, and Calvin had promised him he’d visit for brunch in the morning. Then, he’d disappeared.

I promised him I’d tell him anything I could find, and he promised me to help in any way he could, if I needed it.

With that thought in mind, I made my way to the Bronx and to The Lair. The skyscrapers looked just the same as they had the last time I was there. I was looking for Noah, Elisa’s on-again, off-again vampire boyfriend, and I was hoping that he could help me find her. If he didn’t sink his fangs in me first. It was eerily quiet inside, not at all like the first time, when the street had been flooded with vampires to stop the ECU soldiers from finding us. The sun shone outside so no vampire was anywhere near even the ground floor.

I stopped by the stairs, not wanting to be rude and catch them off guard if they hadn’t smelled me yet. Clearing my throat, I raised my head and called. “Noah?”

It was lame and probably would get me attacked, but what if the program Stacey kept hacking into didn’t find Elisa? What if Elisa was gone from Manhattan? There was no other way to find her.

“Noah?” I called again, this time louder.

The sun didn’t reach that deep into the building. It’s why I’d stopped there, but it still took a while for the first vampire to run down and stop atop the first flight. The sound of his footsteps rushing down had scared me to death, sounding like a rabid dog coming to get me, but I tried to keep my cool. I tried, though I knew he could hear my heartbeat.

“Hello, there,” I said, smiling politely. “Don’t want no trouble, I just want to speak to Noah, if it’s possible.” A good time to remember my manners.
